A number of our students from Prep to Year 10 had written letters to the 2050 ‘Future St Margaret’s Girl’. The 2020 School Captains also wrote a letter and read out one which had been addressed to them by the 1995 School Captain. The purpose of students’ letters was to try to record for posterity the experience of a St Margaret’s student in 2020. Here are some quotes from the letters which were added to the time capsule which is to be opened in 30 years:

‘It has been a strange year. We had to stay home from school and do home learning for weeks'.

‘School life was far from normal'.

‘We now wash our hands more and must not cough'.

‘For us Year 7s as we were just settling into the Secondary school, we were told that we had to go into lockdown and complete online learning from our homes, although it was fun learning from our homes in our pyjamas'.

‘I thought it was great to get up and grab some food in the middle of maths'.

‘When we had the holidays separating Terms 1 and 2, they were definitely not a usual holiday. Can you imagine not being allowed to leave the house for a week?’

‘The distractions were great and no longer being able to see friends face to face was a challenge'.

‘The main thing I thought was slightly annoying was that we did not have access to the water bubblers, which meant we had to get cups of water from Ms Café'.

‘In Term 3, we were all so grateful to be back at school and see our friends. Later that term, there was an amazing event that took place and that was the opening of the Philip Harris Gym. It was an amazing ceremony and after we got to throw rubber ducks into the pool, we also got to keep one'.

‘We have a rock-climbing wall in our school! How cool is that? The change rooms for the new pool are 12 stars out 10!’

‘It has been a year like no other, that’s for sure, it’s had its highs and lows. But one thing is for sure… the true Maggies spirit has shone through and we have come out of the other end as stronger, more capable women who have learnt how to stay resilient and appreciate other things'.

I very much enjoyed reading these letters as they provided an interesting summary of an important aspect of the 2020 academic year.

It has been a big year for St Margaret’s students, and I am grateful for the support of so many associated with the school - your generosity, goodwill, commitment and energy are very much appreciated. We are a community which has highly involved students, active parents, dedicated staff and interested past students who volunteer a tremendous amount of time and effort and, therefore, contribute greatly to the success of St Margaret’s.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas, a restful holiday and a Happy New Year and I look forward to welcoming you all back here at school for the start of Term 1, 2021 on Wednesday 27 January 2021. The three experiences are to be held in the holiday periods in June/July and September. In summary they are:

The Red Centre (13 nights) – Students will learn about CAAMA Radio, the Royal Flying Doctors Service and the School of the Air. Experiences will include hiking the Larapinta Trail (approx. 50km section over 4 days), West MacDonnell Ranges, Kings Canyon and rim walk, Uluru sunset and sunrise, walk around the base of the rock gaining insights into the land and the local Mala people.

Kakadu (13 nights) – Students will experience the largest national park in Australia. They will travel and hike through Jabiru, Katherine and Linchfield while also visiting Jim Jim falls, Mary River, Gunlom Falls and Darwin.

Western Australia (10 nights) – Students will travel to Kalbarri, Monkey Mia, Coral Bay and Exmouth. They will snorkel the world’s largest fringing reef (Ningall Reef) and walk through Yardie Creek Gorge.

This year has certainly been confronting. It has been a time when nothing has been normal. As the year progressed, we have had to question the way we have always done things and change things countless times. It’s been a memorable journey. In the last few weeks of this term, we have been journeying to Christmas through lighting a candle in the Advent wreath. This week at our Christmas Service, we lit the final candle in the Advent Wreath, the Christ candle. While the Christmas story is challenging, the birth of Jesus brings an extraordinary message of unconditional love. It’s not an easy, happy ever after kind of love, but rather God’s love can be messy and confronting at times, just like the first Christmas when Jesus was born. As we move toward the Christmas season, may we know that extraordinary love knowing there will always be complexities.

As we come to the end of this final term, a year full of twists and turns, we pray that you find time to rest, catch your breath, and hopefully have some special times. May you come back ready for whatever 2021 will bring.

May the Creator of all bless us as we move into our holidays and come back ready for the new school year. May the Shepherds continue to be curious, may the Wise ones continue to guide, and may the Angels continue to celebrate. May the love that made the stars, be your guiding light. May the love revealed in Jesus be your hope and inspiration; and may the love of the ever-present Spirit, give you courage, joy and hope, now forever. Amen.

Assessment pieces have been completed and the big business of sorting, packing and cleaning is keeping them busy until the very end.

The highlight from last week were the sleepovers held on Wednesday and Thursday nights for the new Boarders who will begin their journey with us in 2021. Over the two nights, 31 girls stayed over and got a taste of the St Margaret’s Boarding experience. We were thrilled to see the rest of the girls in Boarding embrace the new girls and show them around the school and share with them their boarding experiences. It is times like these when the community within St Margaret’s shines through. We look forward to seeing the new girls again in January 2021 for our new Boarder family welcome and dinner.

This week, the highlight for all of us was the Christmas Dinner held in Eton Hall on Monday night. We are blessed to be spoilt by the chefs in our kitchen who, each year, prepare delicious Christmas fare for us. The St Margaret’s Boarding House food has an enviable reputation and for this we are grateful. The girls all got into the Christmas spirit by dressing up and singing along with Christmas tunes.

At this time of year, it is fitting to thank all the Boarding staff who care for the girls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their caring and nurturing manner helps the girls navigate their way through the school year. We are also thankful for the Nursing staff in the Health Centre, the Facilities staff and the teaching staff who assist the Boarders at Prep. Without all these departments working together our Boarding House simply would not run as well as it does.

On behalf of all Boarding staff, I would like to wish you all a happy and healthy Christmas and a restful break with your families.

However, at the end of each year the challenge of managing change can always be a little unsettling. Year 6 girls are preparing to move into Year 7 and the Year 10 girls are preparing to move into Year 11, which are undoubtedly some of the bigger transitions that happen in a school; new classes, teachers and subjects are on the horizon for all students. They all deserve a well-earned holiday.

It is important to note that holidays should provide opportunity for quiet, unstructured times. It is through activities that involve the girls having time for personal choice, solitude, reading for pleasure, and informal activity, they make sense of what happens to them at school, and of their continually changing perception of what life means and their place in it. It has been fantastic to see a number of classes finding their holiday reading in the library this week. Some students were seeking a particular book in a series and others were scanning plenty of back covers in search of the perfect read. Regardless of their choice, the benefits of reading such as mental stimulation, vocabulary expansion, improved writing skills and entertainment, to name just a few, are significant. Encourage your daughters to step away from the computer, their phone and Netflix for a little while, open a book, and escape into someone else’s imagination.

If you are fortunate to have time with your daughter during the holidays, make sure that you only organise some of the time... not all of it.

I am not one for elaborate farewells but felt it was important to use my final eNews article to thank all of the St Margaret’s community for the past six and a half years.

When arriving in 2014, I instantly felt part of this school community, and I think that this is one of the beautiful qualities of this school. Whenever I felt stuck or confused, I didn’t have to look far for help, so thank you.

There are, of course, too many people to thank individually. Still, please let it be known that I have enjoyed getting to know every one of you through parent meetings, enrolment interviews, Speech Nights and other events across the years. Thank you to you all for your support, friendship, sincerity and trust. I will always remember our shared laughter, our joys, as well as the challenges we have encountered.

I have been privileged to have had in my classroom many outstanding students, each with their own sense of humour, talents and gifts. It has been enjoyable watching your daughters grow, and I thank you for allowing me to be part of their learning journeys. I am leaving with some wonderful memories that I will always treasure.

Thank you for making my time so enjoyable. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year.

As 2020 draws to a close, we can look back on another remarkable year of achievements at St Margaret’s. Each year, I hope as a school we sow the seeds that will help every girl flourish and leave a positive influence through all her interactions. It has been gratifying to see the commitment of our students to their studies, their extra-curricular activities and their compassion shown through supporting the School’s community service and fundraising efforts. Equally committed is our teaching staff in creating a supportive environment where young women can discover and explore their passions and develop a deep love of learning.

Once again, the girls received great results in the final Andrews Cup sports (Basketball and Gymnastics) for the year. Basketball was played for the first time as a competitive sport with the A Grade team winning and being the first name on the trophy. C grade was placed second. In Gymnastics, C2 Grade placed second and D2 Grade third.

Service Learning projects are the focus of Term 4. The early childhood students have created small art pieces and cards for the tenants of AVEO. Years 4 and 5 students have undertaken individual service projects. Year 3 students have written letters of gratitude to 105 heroes of the COVID vaccine, as identified in the Courier Mail on Saturday.

This week, Chapel services for students at either end of the Primary school were held. Pre-Prep students shared their learning and we farewelled the Year 6 girls. We saw their leadership in action for the last time when their Service Learning Project (Cornerstone) came to fruition on Activities Day. These girls researched, planned and ran the day to raise money for Clifton Creek Primary School in Victoria which was burnt to the ground in the bushfires.

The last assembly is always of special significance, not only because it is the last one for the year and the girls are able to toss their panamas into the air, but it is one where I present Head of Primary certificates to the Year 6 girls.

Rafaella Batstone for her diligence and passion for learning and the genuine gratitude she consistently expresses to teachers.

Bronte Tavener for the initiative she demonstrated when consolidating her learning; she consistently takes steps to be responsible for completing tasks on time and to the best of her ability.

Georgia Bruce for the resilience and perseverance she has demonstrated in commencing school at St Margaret’s in Term 4.

Madeleine Eastland for making a consistent effort this semester within all subject areas, learning to persevere and showing resilience when faced with challenges.

Elke Morse for settling into St Margaret’s seamlessly and for being incredibly resilient. She displays kindness and tolerance towards her peers, while showing exceptional manners and politeness to adults.

Kenzie Carter for her caring, empathetic character, passion for learning and the genuine gratitude she expresses to teachers.

Rose Joseph for the thoughtfulness and initiative she demonstrates; she is always the first to offer assistance to staff or her peers.

Olivia Perrett for the responsibility and independence she has developed during her first year of Boarding.

Savannah Hignett for showing resilience and determination throughout the year. She is always helpful within the classroom and encourages her peers to achieve their best.

Millicent Hume for her successful year. She has shown resilience and determination with her schoolwork. Millie always has a smile on her face and whether intentionally or not, regularly entertains.

I will miss the Year 6 girls’ confidence, humour and enthusiasm and I know, as they move to the next stage of their life, they will take many Primary school memories with them.

As you prepare for the long summer break, it is important for learning to continue. Studies show that during the summer break, students tend to lose some of the important academic gains made during the school year and this is regarded as “Summer Loss”. On the Primary POD page, I have listed ways to encourage reading, writing and other ideas for holiday learning. Research has shown that the amount of independent reading a child does outside of school relates to their growth in vocabulary, verbal fluency, reading comprehension and general knowledge.

Thank you to the staff for all they have done this year. To the departing teachers, they go with our gratitude and best wishes. Thank you also to parents for allowing us to be part of each child’s educational journey. I know the children appreciate their teachers and parents, as earlier this term the students visited the prayer space and recorded grateful comments. It was affirming that most students were grateful for others; their family, their school and friends. They were also grateful for their school’s facilities, their personal achievements and the experiences on offer. As one girl wrote ‘the year has gone fast with COVID, everything was different but still amazing”.

It was an amazing year, a year of change with many positives.

I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and thank you for a great year.

State Honours Ensemble Program (Primary)

Congratulations to the following students who will participate in the upcoming State Honours Ensemble Program (Primary) organised by Griffith University Conservatorium of Music. This is a wonderful program that provides outstanding musical opportunities for students to work with renowned conductors and rehearse/perform high level repertoire with likeminded students from around the state.

Staff News

There are some staff changes within the Music Department for 2021. We farewell three of our current music teachers. Chloe Williamson has been teaching at St Margaret’s for ten years and made an enormous contribution to our Strings Program, teaching Double Bass and also our Years 3 and 4 Strings Program. Ms Williamson has taken up a new role at Somerville House and we wish her the best as she takes up this new position.

Eleanor Streatfeild is also leaving St Margaret’s and will be moving to Sydney to take up a new teaching position, as well as postgraduate study. Ms Streatfeild has been a valued member of our Strings Program, teaching the cello and assisting with the Primary Years 3 and 4 Strings Program.

Lauren Albury, who teaches upper brass, has also decided to continue with further study next year through the University of Melbourne. Ms Albury has taught upper brass at St Margaret’s for the past two years and has also assisted the school in performances such as The Addams Family held last year.

We thank these staff very much for their contribution and commitment to the St Margaret’s Music Program and wish them all the best as they embark on new chapters in their lives.

We welcome the following staff for 2021. Welcome back to Alex McPherson who will teach cello. Mr McPherson covered for Ms Streatfeild during Semester 1 this year whilst she was on leave and I know is very much looking forward to teaching students once again at St Margaret’s.

We also welcome Bernado Alviz to teach double bass. Prior to moving to Australia, Mr Alviz studied in Europe and performed in numerous European orchestras, including the Berlin Symphony Orchestra with renowned conductors such as Daniel Barenboim and Zubin Mehta. We are looking forward to welcoming Mr Alviz to the St Margaret’s Strings Program. We are also currently in the process of organising teachers for our upper brass students and will provide further details in the near future.

2021 Private Music Tuition

If your daughter is currently undertaking private music tuition, she will automatically be placed on her current teachers’ roll for 2021. Parents do not need to fill in a new application form. However, if your daughter is wanting to discontinue lessons in 2021, we ask that you please email directly to the Music Department at music@stmargarets.qld.edu.au prior to the end of the school year.

Music Support Group

The first Music Support Group meeting for 2021 will be held on Tuesday 2 February 2021 at 5:00pm in the Primary Music Room. We encourage parents from both the Primary and Secondary schools to become involved.

A very big thank you to all in the St Margaret’s Music Community for a wonderful year. It has been a very unusual year with numerous challenges; however, we were thrilled to still provide our students with many opportunities to rehearse and perform together. Thank you to all students and staff for their positivity, resilience and ability to cope with change as we endeavoured to provide meaningful learning experiences to the students, whilst also bringing the joy of music to our broader community. I believe that the girls will end the school year with wonderful memories of their involvement in the St Margaret’s Music Program in 2020. St Margaret’s first season of summer Netball has been a huge success, giving players from ages 8 to 18 an opportunity to play competitive Netball during October and November. We had 14 teams playing games every Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The fun and friendly atmosphere induced much laughter and team spirit. I would like to thank all the coaches, parents, scorers and team managers for helping bring this season to life. Summer Netball will continue to be part of the St Margaret’s Netball calendar each year as it enables continued development for our regular players and an avenue to introduce the sport to new players. Lastly, a big shout out to our student umpires, Molly Woolf, Sascha Hughes and Genevieve Heather who officiated weekly games as part of the St Margaret’s umpiring pool. As one season comes to an end, I would like to remind everyone that Club Netball 2021 sign on is underway and details can be found on the Club Netball POD page.

Water Polo

Club Water Polo has started the mid-season break and I would like to thank all coaches, parents and staff who have aided in the running of a successful half of the season. In the competition, our B Division Under 12, 13, 14 and under 18C teams are currently undefeated, with six of our eleven teams in the top four in their respective competition ladders. The Christmas break will provide some respite; however, holiday training will be available to all team members from Tuesday 12 January. Swimming Holiday Training

St Margaret's will be offering Swimming training over the holiday period at Nudgee College Swimming Pool, whilst the final stage of construction is completed within the pool area throughout December. These sessions are ideal for girls to continue to develop their swimming fitness and technique prior to a complete break over Christmas. Virtual Holiday Run Club

St Margaret’s Sport is delighted to announce the launch of our Virtual Holiday Run Club. The Virtual Run Club requires you to get out and jog or run during the week, beginning Monday 30 November 2020 to Monday 25 January 2021.

The Run Club is available for all students and any St Margaret’s family members. All participants are asked to take on the challenge and connect with us via the St Margaret’s Strava Club. This data will then be used to award members Virtual Badges for 15km, 40km, 75km, 100km and 200km.

Throughout the four days of performances, students demonstrated their developing skills in storytelling, mime, improvisation, poetry recital, prose reading, impromptu speaking and drama. External adjudicators provided invaluable feedback to performers and commented on the very high standard of presentations.

In 2016, the Jacqueline Noyes Encouragement Award was introduced to the Year 5 Eisteddfod to honour Jacqui who passed away that year.

Jacqui made a significant contribution to the life of Speech and Drama at St Margaret’s. She taught Private Speech and Drama here for 21 years from 1980 to 2001. During that time, she inspired students with her love of literature and passion for performing. Jacqui later adjudicated our end-of-year Eisteddfods from 2009 to 2015, allowing many more students to benefit from her experience and expertise.

As a teacher and adjudicator at St Margaret’s, Jacqui provided warm encouragement and inspiration to many Speech and Drama students. The Jacqueline Noyes Encouragement Award is now presented each year to a Year 5 student who the adjudicator believes demonstrates note-worthy potential through their Eisteddfod performances. Congratulations to Ezara Pearson who is the 2020 recipient of this Award.

Despite the unsettled year, I am proud of all that we have achieved together. We concluded our Going for Bold Capital Campaign, with the new Sports Precinct now in use and the students taking full advantage of the outstanding facilities. We also ran our inaugural Giving Day in March, far exceeding our original goal of $100,000 with a result of just under $163,000 raised. Giving Day saw St Margaret’s students joining together, displaying House spirit and focussing on a common goal.

Donations made to our Scholarship Fund have been extremely generous, which will make an enormous difference to the lives of the girls nominated for this funding.

Today, philanthropy means generosity in all its forms and can be defined as giving gifts of ‘time, talent and treasure’ to help make life better for other people. This has been particularly true of the St Margaret’s community, and we thank you sincerely for all forms of support we have received.

I would also like to acknowledge the loyalty of our valued Corporate Partners, who have demonstrated flexibility and openness in a year when many of our events have had to be cancelled or reimagined.

Between 7-17 December, students may have a one-on-one appointment to speak with one of our interstate team members. They’ll be there to talk about the best degrees or pathway options, how to apply, and to answer any questions about studying with us. Book your phone appointment .

Free TAFE for Year 12 graduates

The Queensland Government offers free TAFE in high priority areas. Eligible Year 12 graduates must enrol and start training within 12 months of finishing school.
